Donna Obermeyer:
Mine is the perspective of a parent with 20 years of experience interacting with special ed in the current system (1980's through 2009) .Substantial statewide systems change that I refer to as 'transformation' is needed to increase response in meeting student need, to reduce costs and to return to individualized plans for students that result in educational benefit. We must come together as parents and educators to support major changes in the system that will benefit both educators and students and create a paradigm shift that moves us back into the education system as a whole.

I am a parent with unique children. I see how children in the special education are segragated apart from others. I have hated the fact that the PTA is so seperate. Our PTA meetings for my unique child are held at a different school and on the same day and time. I also have a child in regular education and cannot go to both. I also feel transformation is due.
