Washington State IDEA Council

Dear Supporters,
It is with sadness and regret that I bring to you the lastest update on the Parent Access Bill.  This bill has become lost, appantly due to budget issues, etc.  I do not have all the answers. So many things are being over looked these days due to the budget crisis we are in.
My hopes are to one day, bring this bill back up and see what can happen.
With everything going on, I feel that change will need to start with you. If you want change in the Special Education System, then we must begin with our own school districts.
Begin by building a relationship with those who work in your local school district. Take time to meet your child's teachers and those who work with your child. Take the time to meet your director and tell him / her what your aspirations are for your child. Don't be afraid to amke suggestions for changes you would like to see.  Don't be afraid to take a stand either. The main thing in my experience, is a willingness to show you want to work together for the good of your child as well as others.  Learn all you can and do not be afraid to ask questions. Learn all you can and ask for help if you need it.

Dear Guests & Parents,
We are now in 2011. We would like to see the Parent Access Bill not go away. I have had many letters, etc. and much support for this bill.  Please get in touch with your Representatives and ask them to sponsor this bill #3093.  Write them emails or make an appointment to speak with them.  Please feel free to sign my guest book and mail your letters of support and personal stories to me @ Sarah98584@gmail.com   . Please do not let your Representatives be so consumed in budget that you are ignored, especially if you are a constituent.  This bill does not & will not cost money. This bill is not to cause discord in the class room or for parents to barge in. Everything must be in order and parents & school staff must be on the same page for our children to flourish. We parents deserve to have a say and to help those educating our children. We need to be peaceful w/o conflicts.  Our children are a part of the future.
    Thank you,
SarahAnn

Hooray! The Parent Access Bill now has a number!  Read on..updated by my partner..
House Bill 3093 needs your support for parents and their consultants or evaluators to be able to observe current special ed placements and proposed special ed placements in order to effectively advocate for students receiving special education services, so they benefit from their education.
Use this link to find your legislators and their contact information:
                                    http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/Default.aspx
This is a 'House' bill and so you would contact your 'representatives' in the house.  However, you may also want to educate and inform your senator about this issue.  We currently do not have a senate bill but will appreciate any contact with senators that may cause them to initiate a bill in the senate.
Following is a link to (click on 'original bill') where you can read the text of the bill.  After this link you will find a one pager as suggested talking points when speaking with your legislators.  An email doesn't always work as well as a phone call but you can also leave a message for your legislators (2 representatives and 1 senator & the governor)  using the legislative hotline 1-800-562-6000:

December 30, 2009

Dec. 30, 2009       Today I rec. an email from Representative Haigh. She will not be able to see the bill through this session since it is so short and she is working on budget.   I wrote her back saying I will keep this bill alive and perhaps someone will sponsor it, if not this session , but the next.
Please still keep your comments coming about this bill and state why you support it. It would be good to state whether you have had problems or not.
